What is a Posture Brace (Posture Corrector)? types, benefits and how to use itOur posture is defined by the tone of our muscles and the shape of our spine. In most cases, we adopt a perfect upright posture, but this may not be possible in some individuals. This is likely to be due to the nature of their job (sitting slouched in front of a desk for long hours), spinal disease and muscle problems. In such cases, additional support may be offered to patients by physical therapists. This additional support is available in the form of posture braces.
Posture braces are also called posture corrector or posture supporters. In this article, we shall take a look at them in a bit more detail.
What are posture braces?A posture brace is a custom designed garment that supports the shoulders and the back and offers stability to the muscles of the back, neck and shoulder. It works by pulling the shoulder backwards and straightens the back by aligning the structures in their natural position. Women can purchase a posture support in the form of a posture bra.
When is a posture brace offered to patients?Posture braces are prescribed to patients with back deformities. The common types of deformities include forward bending of the spine (kyphosis), sideward bending of the spine (scoliosis) and advancing age. Lack of exercise and increased body weight are contributing factors to poor posture and back braces can help keep the posture upright. As previously mentioned, leading a sedentary life and a job that requires long hours in front of a desk can cause back problems, and posture supporters can help.
Posture support is also offered in patients who have suffered from whiplash injury and who have problems with the intervertebral discs that lie in between the vertebral bones. Degeneration of the spine as seen in osteoarthritis is also a recognized indication.
